Forced marriages

What’s the difference between a forced marriage and an arranged marriage?

An arranged marriage is not the same as a forced marriage. In an arranged marriage, families take a leading role in choosing the marriage partner, but both the bride and groom are involved in choosing their partner and have freely given their permission to marry each other.

In a forced marriage one or both people aren't given a choice about who they are going to marry or even if they want to get married at all.

No-one should ever be emotionally or physically forced into marrying someone they do not want to. If you are worried that this might be happening to a child or young person you know, support is available. For advice, visit yourrightscotland.org or call the free 24-hour helpline on 0800 027 1234.
